Created for Chef Marcel Vigneron as a neighborhood restaurant to serve dinner fare, its design embodied modern elegance with rustic flair. Situated in the Melrose/Fairfax district of LA, it was essentially this bustling site to deliver something special amongst the wild boutiques and trendy shops.
When guests arrive, they are embraced by an inviting anteroom dressed in dark gray plaster walls. Once in the space, the commotion of Melrose settles. Candle-lit lanterns and industrial-style chandeliers add ambiance and warmth. Chevron wood doors framed by floor-to-ceiling glass panes provide a glimpse into the space. Accenting the doors are large, forged iron pulls. These custom-made features add memorable touchpoints to the design while setting the mood for Marcel’s delectable menu.
Interior finishes create an elegant atmosphere of modern and rustic character. White troweled plaster walls blend with a pickled wood ceiling, making the interior envelope memorable and unique. A variety of green and blue clay tiles accent the bar facade. The floor-to-ceiling mirror behind the back bar enlarges the space while adding sparkle and interest. This technique expands the dining room, giving the illusion that the restaurant is double in size.
Collaborating closely with Marcel, the design evolved over several months through a series of working sessions, sketches, and a number of talented fabricators.
