Inspired by the magical nature of a butterfly, this luxury hotel was created as a 5-star Boutique Resort in Hainan, an island province of China. Often referred to as the “Butterfly Kingdom,” Hainan Island is home to the highest concentration of butterflies in the country. The beauty of this site is it is located slightly inland, away from the beach resorts, but benefits from the tropical climate. Providing a hotel experience in the inland region versus the typical offering along the coast allowed Gensler and Darlene’s team to re-imagine the resort typology. Captivated by the adjacent butterfly sanctuary, the team studied their metamorphosis, wing flutter and shape. These natural aspects led to planning strategies, form generation, textures, and color palette inspiration. A winding, verdant entry drive entices guests as they ascend the resort drive to the main entry. The hotel’s grand architectural gesture establishes a moment of pause. Guests arriving at the porte cochère are greeted by tall, cocoon-shaped buildings. These tubular forms are united by a large, sweeping roof structure, giving them presents as they glisten along the reflecting pool. To the west, they are programmed for a tearoom and retail, whilst to the east, they’re part of the grand ballroom’s facilities and private event spaces. Centered upon arrival, a 30′ tall conical ceiling surrounds the Main Lobby. Composed of translucent and clear crystal panels, this fluttering textural expression intrigues guests instantly. Wispy and tiered panels create the illusion of butterflies in motion.
The profile of the butterfly lends shape to the overall planning scheme. Resort buildings are clustered in a wing pattern and are noticeable from the hillside region. The unique organization of the buildings provides guestroom views of the mountains and sea. The resort’s central spine connects the lobby to guest amenities and, ultimately, to the event promenade and pavilion. This strong axis unites all sections of the resort and serves as the primary path of travel, but after guests adapt to the grounds, they will find alternative routes with moments of surprise. The goal is to walk the grounds and move like a butterfly, exploring the many hidden aspects within the grounds, from colorful gardens to calm, reflecting ponds.
Overall, the design brings Hainan a new resort offering where wonderment enthuses like the butterfly metamorphosis.
